Steel Dust Meters Australia

Steel Dust Meters Australia

Here at SafeGas, we supply steel dust meters designed to prolong the longevity of your machinery.

We are often asked why some machines fail early in their life while others operate for many years?

There are a few reasons that machinery can fail, with the most common being abrasion.

Abrasive wear is caused by steel dust contamination of the lubricating oil or grease compartments. Steel dust gets trapped at a point between two moving parts. The trapped particles then usually embed themselves in the softer metal and then cut grooves in the harder metal. The lubricating fluid minimizes friction and adhesion, effectively improving the cutting efficiency of the abrasive particles during subsequent revolutions of the machine components.

Control of particle contamination in the lubricant system is critical to ensure your machinery operates as it should.

Steel dust particles cost money and productivity in a number of ways;

  1. Restriction of Oil Flow
  2. Restriction of Moving Parts
  3. Increased Consumption of Lubricants and Filters
  4. Higher Energy Consumption

Through monitoring the condition of your machinery it is possible to reveal the existence of steel dust particles in order to take proactive measures and prevent expensive failures.

Any company that uses rotating machinery can benefit from using an oil or grease steel dust meter. They not only alert you to possible premature bearing or gearset damage, but because they’re portable, the tests can be carried out on site or on the premises. This saves the need of sending a sample of the oil or grease to a lab to be analysed, which can often take up to 72hrs before results are available. These units give instant readings and are inexpensive to buy.
