There are a few reasons that machinery can fail, with the most common being abrasion.
Abrasive wear is caused by steel dust contamination of the lubricating oil or grease compartments. Steel dust gets trapped at a point between two moving parts. The trapped particles then usually embed themselves in the softer metal and then cut grooves in the harder metal. The lubricating fluid minimizes friction and adhesion, effectively improving the cutting efficiency of the abrasive particles during subsequent revolutions of the machine components.
Control of particle contamination in the lubricant system is critical to ensure your machinery operates as it should.
